Tae Kwon Do forms are a prescribed pattern of movements that duplicate the logical actions of a TKD student when in a self defense, combative situation. The forms include blocking techniques, kicking, hand striking, grabbing, knee strikes, elbow strikes, as well as various other offensive skills. Every form moves the student in all four directions to emulate the attack of multiple assailants. Tae Kwon Do forms are also called Poomsaes, or Hyungs.

Performing the forms (patterns) involves:

Direction – Every martial artist must learn to transition seamlessly and quickly from one direction to another. This aspect of the form duplicates the real life situation of fighting one opponent in front and having another opponent come from the rear or side.

Stance – Footwork is another vital element taught within the form. Balance and a strong foundation are developed by practicing the martial stances incorporated into the form. Proper stance gives the strong foundation for kicks, punches, and all the powerful techniques to disable the enemy.

Pattern – The forms are patterns of logical movements and reflexes. They must be practiced until they become fluid and ingrained into our memory. Properly performed by a skilled TKD student, they are as beautiful as ballet.

Technique – These elements of Tae Kwon Do forms are symbiotic. They all work together. Technique is the precise application of the skills that are developed by the repetitive practicing and perfecting of the forms. A beginner can kick but his technique will be that of a novice. A Black Belt will kick with intention, speed, power, and accuracy.

There are several different sets of forms used by various Tae Kwon Do associations.

The WTF (World TKD Federation) uses the Taeguk forms.

The ITF (International TKD Federation) uses the Chang Hon (Chon-ji) forms.

Jhoon Rhee, the father of American Tae Kwon Do created a unique set of forms for his school.

There are also forms for Pyung Ahn, and Song Am TKD.

TKD forms are a tool to develop skills within a TKD student. Diligently practiced with an attitude of achieving perfection, they will be a strong aid in combat readiness and self defense.

Silat is a traditional Malaysian art form which is based and developed on the observations of animals like tiger, eagle and monkey. Years ago, this was practiced among many tribes in the Malay islands and they used this skill during the wars among the different tribes. During the colonial rule of British, Dutch and Portuguese, the practice of Silat was banned. Therefore it was practiced in privacy by the locales. Post the World War II, the Malay people started their struggle for freedom and finally got independence. The ban from Silat was lifted and this marked the rebirth of this martial art form.

This form of art has many styles and each has some specialty associated with it. Silat schools come under the gamut of a national organization specially framed for this purpose.

There are various forms and styles of Silat but the most practiced one includes- joint manipulation, animal-based techniques, bladed weapons, and combination of others. The Malaysian region boasts of having more than one hundred styles of Silat. It is also said that approximately 20 percent of the Malaysian schools trains in various forms of Silat. This martial art form is considered to be an act of self defense, a way to achieve healthy and fit body. The interest in the martial art has been increasing among people as it not only teaches you discipline but also equip you with techniques to defend yourself.

It might be not be easy to trace the origin of Silat due lack of historical evidence. However, one can dig out the past with the help of oral historical records. It is said that this martial art form originated in the 7th Century in Sumatra Island. If fables are to be believed then it is understood that this technique was formulated by a women who once saw a fight between a bird and a tiger. After observing the combat she taught the techniques to her spouse and this is how it started spreading its root. This story has variations depending on the region where it’s narrated.

The traditional clothing of the Silat comprises of a top and pair of loose pant along with a sash. This martial art form in practiced in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and some parts of Thailand and Philippines.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial Art best known for its advanced kicking techniques. As the world’s most popular martial art in terms of number of parishioners, it is now an official Olympic sporting event. It is now one of only two Asian martial arts that are included in the Olympic Games. It is also practiced by the Korean military as a part of its routine training.

Tae kwon do is an incredible mixture of stretching muscles to their limits while stressing them to their limits anaerobically. However, the tremendous physical training is only part of the ultimate goal of Tae Kwon Do training. Training in Tae Kwon-do involves both individual and group activities which also help develop communication skills.

Tae Kwon Do is an excellent means of fitness training. Whether you’re looking to improve your confidence, improve your fitness, meet new people, or just to take up a new past-time, Tae Kwon Do is for everyone. Of course, you will also have a lot of fun as you improve your fitness, gain self-defense skills and learn the exciting Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do training provides students with a positive way of life.

Tae Kwon Do is indeed an art form. The literal translation of Tae Kwon Do is “The Way of Kicking and Punching. While Tae Kwon Do is a fighting art, it does not encourage violent living. Tae Kwon Do, a highly disciplined activity, is used both as a form of self-defense and exercise. It is an effective and great way to unify the mind and body. Tae Kwon Do is a traditional Korean martial art designed to provide the ultimate in unarmed self-defense.

Using a Pen For Self-Defense in Martial Arts Training

One of the biggest problems with most martial arts training programs, is the tendency to limit yourself to only learning the “official” weapons of your chosen style. The alternative is to borrow the Ninja’s ability to see beyond the form of any particular weapon, and recognize the truth that anything can be pressed into service as a weapon, and an aid for your own personal defense.

One of the reasons for learning to use a pen for self defense is that they are so readily available. And, for most people, they either carry or have access to at least one throughout the course of a normal workday. This availability factor makes the pen an excellent choice. As a place to begin your training and understanding of how to use a simple pen as a powerful self defense weapon, the following tactics are offered as examples of how effective this weapon can be in a real-world self-protection situation.

“There in a pinch” – The small size and natural shape of a pen makes it easy to manipulate in your hand. It’s also not necessary to conform your hand to the weapon, as you have to do with other weapons such as a firearm.

That being said, you can hold the pen in your hand so that you can apply pain techniques by pinching his skin between your thumb and the shaft of your new favorite weapon. The ears, lips, and the thin, sensitive skin on the inside of the upper arms and the sides of the neck make perfect targets for this “sneaky little Ninja technique!”

“Getting your point across” – By gripping the shaft of the pen, and holding it like a spike or dagger, allows you to jab and stab. You can also hold the pen as you would for the pinching techniques above – allowing you to stab and snag whatever parts of his body get close enough for you to take advantage of.

“Mightier than the sword” – In today’s world, carrying a sword might cause you to stand out in a crowd. Do you agree?

But, we can still borrow some lessons and uses of the warrior’s most prized weapon and apply them using the pen. This concept will, except in very rare instances, completely confuse and overwhelm your assailant.

While you can slash and scrape the pen across his body targets, this obvious use is not what I’m referring to. What I’m talking about here is “drawing” the pen in the middle of the attack – just like the master warrior draws his sword when the attacker won’t see it coming!

Imagine carrying the pen in your shirt pocket and then, while you were avoiding an incoming punch and bringing your hand up to cover…

…you simultaneously pulled the weapon using the natural movement of your hand and arm. Much like a master magician conceals his moves, your attacker will never see the pen in your hand, and will be completely confused and overwhelmed as he tries to make sense of the damage, pain, and wounds that are being caused by, what he thinks is, your “empty” fist!

Of course, this article can only be a basic introduction to using the pen for self defense. If you want to take this further and make it a part of your martial arts training curriculum, then I suggest getting information on using the Kubotan: Self-defense keychain as a basis for your training.

Kickboxing is an excellent way to build up one’s physical health. The movements used are simple and put little strain on the body. At the same time, they exercise power, self-control, flexibility, and stamina. Being a well-rounded exercise that uses both the upper body and the legs, it’s more thorough in its benefits that many other forms of exercise.

For many visual learners, the most effective way to get started with kickboxing is to rent or buy a DVD or tape. By being able to rewind and pause the lesson, you can learn at your own pace. Since the instructor can’t see you, there’s less self-consciousness and you can perform more naturally. But if you’re getting part of a series, make sure the entire series appeals to you, or you’d be better off buying a stand-alone product.

People on strict budgets who want to train themselves in kickboxing can try books instead of more expensive methods. Many instructional books are available in libraries for free. Even purchased books cost much less than many other methods of training. Look for a book that fits your level of experience if you choose this route. A book that is too advanced or insufficiently advanced for you will be a waste of your time.

Naturally, the most expensive but often most effective means of getting **kickboxing training** is to take classes in a school or gymnasium environment. This will result in a level of personal attention and distinct progression that can help you achieve your full kickboxing potential without too much stress or pressure. Try to find something as close to you as possible; a long drive or walk to and from classes will often result in you being too tired to appreciate the activity.

Prices for various means of learning kickboxing will vary greatly, depending on the medium and the instructor. You may also want to purchase specialized gear, such as **muay thai equipment**, to get optimal performance. This isn’t completely necessary, however, and many locations will offer gear rentals with memberships. You can spend not a dime, or you can spend hundreds of dollars… it all depends on what you feel you need and what your budget allows. Generally speaking, however, personal trainers and instructors will always be the most expensive route, while self-training aided by visual products will be the cheapest.

Bruce Lee is a well know martial artist and movie artist. He is a strong man who faces the challenges of life. He is seldom lazy and takes very little rest. He spends almost all of his time training and studying. In his personal library, there were thousands of books. He liked reading ancient wisdom, like Lao-tzu, Confucius and Sun Tzu.

Bruce Lee created the unique combating system of Jeet Kune Do, the way of the Intercepting Fist. However, during his short life, he did not manage to establish the whole and thorough system and principle. He did not left the world with his whole fighting concept. Only the persons who would lucky enough to learn personally from him have a glimpse of how powerful and deep the system he created was. In 1970, Lee had a major back injury. He was forced to stay at home. During this period, he spent time to organize his experiences and insights. Originally, he was planning to publish them in books. However, the plan was not fulfilled.

Lee began studying Wing Chun since thirteen years old. From that point, he spent his whole life studying and researching the real secret of martial art. Jeet Kune Do focuses on free style fighting. It opposes straight and inflexible forms. While studying Jeet Kune Do, it is advised that students should maintain an open mind without overly restrained by what was taught in different kind of martial arts, including Jeet Kune Do itself. Lee spend a lot of time understanding the commons and differences of different kind of fighting techniques and he tries to clarify the relationships and conclude a universal form.

By the popularity of his movies like the Fist of Fury and the Way of the Dragon, Bruce Lee was known by the world for his excellent combating skills and speed. Today, the world still sees him as one of the greatest martial artist ever born in human history. Some even spend substantial time and effort in study the little and scattered information left by him. But in fact, his influence to the world is philosophical and conceptual rather than real information about how to fight more powerfully.

Shaolin Kung Fu is one of the most popular and respected martial arts because of its history and realistic applications. However, Shaolin Kung Fu is very complicated and has a lot of moves to learn. Using a Shaolin training DVD can help a practicing martial artist learn the moves and techniques in their own home and have the movements captured on video to be seen again and again. It is hard to pick up moves from only a few demonstrations, and a teacher rarely has enough free time to live with you and show you techniques any time you wish. With a Shaolin training DVD you can review techniques and movements until you have them down.

Shaolin Kung Fu is an External form of Chinese Kung Fu. This means that it deals with the hands, the feet, the body, the eyes, and the stances. It is practical, and physical. The Internal forms of Chinese Kung Fu deal with the mind, heart, and spirit. Shaolin Kung Fu pays special attention to stretching and using stretching to develop speed, range of motion, and defensive tactics. The different advantages of each stance are also very important. Using a Shaolin training DVD you can review the different stances, pause the DVD, and make sure you have the stance in your muscle memory like it is second nature.

Different forms can be used in different situations and used to react to the movements of the opponent or attacker. With so many difference stances and forms, many students find that there is a lot to remember mentally, and a lot for the muscles to have to remember as well. This is why a Shaolin training DVD can be such a big help. It allows you to go back and review any stances or information that your body has trouble remembering, or your mind has trouble recalling quickly.

There are many slight variations of Shaolin Kung Fu and they can contain everything from punching, kicking, throws, joint locks, grappling, and weapons training. Having a teacher to go over the moves with you is a huge help. Sometimes it is impossible for a student to know if they are doing a motion correctly without a teacher to help them and explain what they are doing wrong. But when your teacher is not there, a Shaolin training DVD can be the next best thing and can allow you to review movements as much as you want.

I really like the Kung Fu: Shaolin Kung Fu Foundation Form DVD because it breaks the moves down so they are easy to understand and replicate. The DVD explains the reasoning behind the movements so that I can make sure I am doing a move functionally correct. The Kung Fu: Shaolin Kung Fu Foundation Form DVD can help a beginner, or an experienced martial artist.
